CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES IN MYANMAR It is so wide to present all details about ministries in Myanmar. We should, therefore, take a smaller scope of it; “Ministries of Myanmar Brethren Churches.” Myanmar Brethren Churches Fellowship ( MBCF ) A. History Background According to Myanmar Church history, it is no doubt to say that Dr. Judson, a missionary, started and multiplied churches. Before several years he arrived Myanmar, there was no development of Christian ministry though there had already arrived Catholic missionary. By 19th century, there became significant not only there was the birth of many churches among Burmese people but also many Baptist churches were led by Burmese people themselves. The first Burmese leading church was Yangon Church which had been led by Rev. U Inn (1856 – 1860), the second convert through Dr. Judson. Briefly it should be said that the Brethren Mission in Myanmar started in 1884 and was led by native believers. At that time, the believers in Yangon did their worship service at Lanmadaw Baptist Church. The church elders used to take turn to preach. One day in 1881, an elder U Maung Maung preached about the second coming of Christ. The pastor of the church did not accept his sermon. He rebuked U Mg Mg not to preach such a message. Some elders did not agree with the pastor. Then about five elders, namely U Barwar (U Inn’s son- in – law ), U Nay Dwe ( U Barwar’s son – in – law ), U Tun Ngein ( The author of Burmese- English Dictionary ), U Yaung ( U Mg Lan Bar ) and U Mg Mg, who had the same faith, were separated from that church and gathered having brethren fellowship. By this means became Brethren Assembly in Myanmar. After about 50 years, Dr. Ba Han became the church leader. When he led the church, the congregation began to worship at his house permanently. According to some elder’s saying it was about 1935 that Yangon Brethren Assembly had been divided into two: Close Brethren and Open Brethren. The open Brethren that prefers “all believers are equal before God and have right to participate in the Lord’s Supper”, was led by Dr. Ba Han along with U Tun Mg and U San Gyi. After Dr. Ba Han had gone for eternal home in 1969 May 13, elder Tin Mg Tun carried pastoring out from that day up to day on. Under Dr. Tin Mg Tun’s leadership, the congregation was able to build the meeting hall of Yangon Assembly. He founded the WITNESSING FOR CHRIST (WFC), and took a responsibility for Emmaus Bible correspondence in Myanmar. Then thousands of people had come to the Lord through his ministries and Yangon Assembly has been growing up to about 1500 attendants on Sunday. Here we cannot forget the late Dr. Lian Khan Hang, vice chairman of Myanmar Brethren Churches Fellowship (MBCF). He started the ministry in 1978 from his Jerusalem of the Chin people and then he extended to all over Myanmar. He went to his eternal home successfully on November 21, 2000. By his means the Church has spread and increased throughout the country. It is estimated that there are more than 50 assemblies and 4000 members having fellowship in MBCF. B. Minister Conference As the heart of MBCF is to have fellowship in Christ, each member stands as local church but works together in unity. MBCF shows its unity in ministry and in conferences. For the latest news, MBCF held “Minister Conference” on 14 - 18 March, 2005. There about 63 attendants came from different places, different states. At that conference, Bro. Ronnie Tin Mg Tun, Bro. Thang Cin Lang, Bro. Daniel Kham Suan Thang, Bro.Tin Mg Nyo, Bro. Kap Cin Thang and Bro. Paul Khay Kyine, including me conducted Bible Teaching and all attendants were encouraged and refreshed by the word of God. Besides during that conference we, all ministers, could share our experiences of ministry. C. Witnessing For Christ (WFC) Since 1973, Dr. Tin Mg Tun was convicted to extend the ministry and WFC was born by the grace of God. WFC, therefore, had crowned her Silver Jubilee in 1988. Still God is blessing WFC up to day on. There are three branches within these 32 years, Kalaymyo branch, Myitkyina branch, and Tamu branch. WFC is responsible for personal evangelism, Emmaus Bible Correspondence and others. Many came to the knowledge of God through its ministry. Administrated by Dr. Tin Mg Tun as chairman, there are about 50 staffs actively serving with love for Christ. The result was so great that its branch in Kalaymyo gave birth to Gideon Myanmar Bible School in 1996 which had trained 404 ministers who are currently serving the Lord in their respective denominations. Upper Myanmar Ministries Concerning “Upper Myanmar Ministries”, there are various activities, such as personal evangelism, Gospel Team movement, local ministry movement, Youth Camp and so on. It is better to present how the local churches are co-operatively working for Christ. A. Volunteer for Christ This Gospel team was grouped in 1996. It came out for a vision intending to visualize three purposes: (a) to give way to those who are willingly dedicated to God and practice their ministry gifts; (b) To win the lost souls to Christ; (c) to encourage the Churches stand firm on sound doctrine. Its target fields are northern Chin Hills and Kabaw Valley. VFC carried its purpose out 3 times a year. VFC underwent many hardships but continued to march. Sometimes by car, sometimes on foot, they joyfully went and preached the Gospel from place to place. They had ever landed the tip of mountains, sometimes crossed the deep forest in which no sunshine can be seen. God encouraged and blessed VFC. In the year of 2005, by means of VFC ministry, 157 people were preached the Gospel and 53 were saved. Besides, new believers (about 33) took baptism and 5 households are added to the Church. From 1996 to 2005, at least 3000 people have already been preached the Gospel. There became a revival where VFC landed and preached the Gospel. The matter of VFC is now administrated by a committee in which some elders and deacons from local churches are working together hand in hand. B. Bible Teaching In February, 2005, Bro. Kap Cin Thang and I did their Gospel trip to Upper Myanmar and conducted a Bible Teaching in Kham Pat Township. God showed His glory and 35 people were saved. By Feb. 17, 2005, Shalom Christian Assembly had been given birth. Leaving from Kham Pat, we two joined to the elder meeting held in Kan Oo village and then, continuously traveled to Sialthawzang village for the Gospel. There we were warmly welcome by the local elders and could get a chance to conduct a Bible Teaching again. In day time, the Word of God was instructed and by night the revival worship service. By means of instructing the Word of God to the villagers many came to the Lord and many were filled with the encouragement by the Word of God. So we can see that God is along with Bro. Kap and me throughout their Gospel trip and Bible Teaching. After finishing all, we came back to Yangon on March and gave testimony before brothers and sisters. C. Youth Camp Since Brethren Assembly values evangelism, the Gospel has been preached by means of many ways. Likewise, Upper Myanmar Brethren Churches annually hold combining Youth Camp (for young men and women from 15 assemblies). In every Youth Camp, God revived the Church through young men and many came to the knowledge of God. In Fetyayeshin ( Kuang lian village), Youth Camp of Upper Myanmar area was conducted on April 8-12, 2005. By the end of that camp, many came to the Lord and some dedicated to serve the Lord. For the next year, Youth Camp will be conducted again. Therefore, 15 assemblies have to raise some fund. For the next year Youth Camp, a decision was made to be more effective; i)Youth camp should be led by active youth leaders; ii)to make schedule as systematic as possible ; iii) to have well-prepared courses; iv) to classify the saved and the unsaved into at least two classes.
