GM Exec Scores Hole In One, Gives $1 Million Away [8/30/01]
Michael A. Grimaldi, vice president of General Motors Corporation and general manager, field sales, service and parts, announced that the million dollars received by GM by virtue of his hole-in-one at a charity golf event Sunday will be donated to a number of worthwhile charities and educational institutions.
"I'm pleased to announce that the proceeds from the million dollar hole-in-one prize in the 'Richest Day in Golf' charity event will be donated by GM to the J.P. McCarthy Foundation and other charities which my family and I also personally support," Grimaldi said. "Most of these organizations are in Southeast Michigan where, GM of course, has its major presence. Others include educational institutions which GM supports and which I have worked closely with as a GM executive.
Thunderbird Flies Again - Almost [8/30/01]
After an extended production delay to address faulty engine components, the Ford Thunderbird again rolls down the assembly line. Because the troublesome cooling fan issue has not been rectified, the T-bird is not headed for dealers just yet. Thunderbird and Lincoln LS sedan production has resumed to allow the Wixom plant to again build and ship Lincoln Continentals and Town Cars; the large Lincolns were also brought to a halt due to the way the facility is designed. The Thunderbird and eight-cylinder Ls models will be stored until nondefective parts become available and are installed.
Child Air Bag Death Rate Cut 90% in 5 Years [8/30/01]
The rate of child deaths from air bags declined a remarkable 90.3 percent between 1996 and 2000. The rate declined dramatically despite triple the number of passenger air bags on the road, according to government highway safety data included in a report released today by the Air Bag and Seat Belt Safety Campaign of the National Safety Council.
A primary reason for the decline is a stunning shift in how adults report securing children in motor vehicles. A new survey found no drivers of passenger air bag equipped vehicles report placing children -- newborns to four-year-olds -- in the front seat. Only 10 percent of these drivers with passenger air bags say they allow children 5-12 to ride in the front seat.
The study's authors noted that children are still being killed by air bags, illustrating that self-reported behavior is not always the same as actual behavior. But they said the shift in responses represents a sea-change in the correct understanding of air bag safety.
2002 Lincolns Available with Digital Telematics [8/29/01]
Ford will offer its first digital telematics system on 2002 Lincoln models. Supplied by Motorola, the new Lincoln Vehicle Communications System (VCS) features location-based satellite global position system (GPS) route guidance, roadside assistance, emergency assistance and automatic crash notification, all of which provide drivers with a link to information, security and peace-of-mind. The Lincoln VCS also incorporates a hands-free voice recognition system that allows drivers to use simple verbal commands for digit or pre-set name dialing, such as, "Call Bill Smith," and personalized information, both available in conjunction with Sprint PCS Voice Command.
