I've been waiting for many years to enjoy: An authentic Italian puppet show! It was a Burattini spectacular which is glove puppets and the direct origins of the british Punch & Judy show that I have been performing and studying for many years.
I watched the performance absolutely spellbound and was completely captured by the magic of seeing this family tradition which i learnt had been passed down through 7 generations.
the theater was huge and covered by red curtains with yellow trimmings and tassels the play board or front stage reached just over the head of the performer (yes only one) but he must of had some holes in it at certain points where he could rest some of the characters while others came on to create the affect that there was an entire cast of living puppets in the show at times in the performance there was as manny as four puppets on stage at one time but he made this trick work with speed and wiggled the static characters from time to time so they were never dead.
The theater(Stage) was about two meters in length and had a depth of about one meter with real wings that added dimension to the show and various beautiful painted backgrounds where rolled up and down to change the scenes as well as a front cloth with the central characters on it dancing in front of their home town.
The show was in two halves and it was a refreshing change to the Punch show that i have grown to love so much very little violence and when it came it was so funny it was accepted and quickly forgotten.
Although my Italian is limited I understood enough of the show to get the gist of the story which was partly translated to me by my friend Davide.
The show was about: the central character:Gianduja (who comes from Torino like Davide)was sleeping with his friend when a beautiful fairy came to grant him good luck and find out if he was up to the challenge of finding a magic bottle of water to save a princess that had been cursed by a witch. the show was full of jokes and a cleverly thought out story line that reminded me very much of traditional panto in england.
when Gianduja came to the haunted castle he saw a ghost that shouted out "I'll eat you!!!!!!!!" when his friend asked him if he'd seen the "I eat you" ghost he replied "yes and I saw the "I drink you ghost too!" it was the way the performer operated the characters and told the jokes that made it so funny even with my limited Italian i found this very funny.
the performer was a lovely little man that just oozed friendliness even when the children got up to dance to the music he just told them in a kindly way to take their seats, i found this interesting as a performer because i know how annoying that can be.
the finale consisted of dancing puppets and one with a stretchy neck that popped up and down to the music and made the audience shriek with delight as it came hurtling out towards us it was very funny. the characters spoke with the accents and dialects of their regions and the puppetry was fast and technically amazing, after the show he paraded all the other puppets through the theatre from all the other shows he performed and Gianduja had an extra dance with first his beloved friend mister punch and then his wife the show finished on them kissing we roared best four euros spent in my life!

If you can dream, you can create! |

I am always creating new shows and characters to delight and entertain I go to the covent garden festivals to meet other performers and share my ideas its a great place to see other great artists who share the same passion for this amazing art! |
If you believe in what you are dreaming, so can we! |
|
|
|
In my experience the best shows come from the ability to enchant people with exciting stories and interesting characters, with this solid foundation there are no limits to the worlds you can create and the voyages you can take your public to |
As long as there is imagination left in the worl my work can never be finished! |
