Most instruments of the Orchestra started with thing of nature. For example, thousands of years ago a man found he could make a few notes by blowing through a hole in a hollow bone. This today is know as the flute.
The modern orchestra is very large in comparison to its predecessors in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, sometimes comprising 100 or more players. The basic instrument families and their members are as follows in the navigation bar.
