| Dear Mommy, I Love You by Rachel Kendra |
His mother was always there for him
She taught him to read and to swim
She kissed his knees when they got scraped
She gave him medicine when his tummy ached
She watched him climb trees and play football
Her heart stopped every time she saw him fall
She framed the pictures that he drew
They said, "Dear Mommy, I love you"
She signed him up for Little League
She made sure he had his glove before they could leave
Whenever he looked up, she was in the stands
Wearing a shirt that said #1 fan
She watched him grow up through the years
How quickly they passed brought her to tears
She thought, "My little boy will soon be a man"
As she took him to his first dance
He soon was interested in the opposite sex
She always told him personality first, looks next
She taught him to be gentlemanly and chivalrous
Hold open doors, give up his seat on the bus
She told him never to break a girl's heart
Never lead her on, never be smart
She said, "Treat every girl like a queen
Adnd you will meet the girl of your dreams"
She watched him leave for his first date
She called after him, "Don't be late"
She waited up for hours after his curfew
Then she realized, then she knew
She ran to the phone when it rang
The policeman said it was a gang
Her son was driving the girl home
At the point she steadied the phone
They jumped out when they saw the girl
She listened as the story unfurled
They held a gun to her head
But he said, "You touch her and you're dead"
He tried to pull them off her
Seeing her like that was more than he could endure
Then they all attacked him
The girl could go, she was free again
She ran into a grocery store
With her hair a mess and her dress torn
She dialed 911, telling them to hurry
She knew his mother would begin to worry
The police rushed to the place
He had blood smeared all over his face
He said, "Do this for me before I die
For I know I will, no matter how hard I try
Tell my mother she was the best
Because of her, I aced every test
I know the pain is very real
If you were to die, I don't know how I would deal
You were the perfect mom, you did everything right
Cleaned me up if I got in a fight
But now there's nothing you can do
Don't feel guilty, I don't want you to
I only did what you said
To see this girl safely to her bed
I only did what you told me
Be kind, courteous, and gentlemanly
I'm sorry, I have to leave you now
You must make it through somehow
But just remember the pictures that I drew
'Dear Mommy, I love you.' "
