Most people think sharks are blood-thirsty, human-eating monsters that want to go out and destroy the world. It's not really like that. In fact, only about 20 out of about 375 are harmful to humans! On the other hand, some people think sharks are cute little things and want to go pet them. That's not it either. You should always use extra caution around sharks, even if they don't look dangerous. Out of about 375 kinds of sharks, over half are less than 3 ft. 3 in. Sharks range from sizes of 6.5 inches (Lantern Shark) to 40 feet (whale shark)!
Most active sharks like the Oceanic White-tip Shark never stop swimming- even to sleep! Some sharks will snooze on a nearby seabed or find an underwater cave for the night.
Sharks are perfectly built for life in the sea. Their streamlined shape and the way in which the high tail fin is balanced by the pectoral fins means that they can swim and dive effortlessly. Their long tails send them along at a gentle cruising speed.
Sharks depend very heavily on their sense of smell to find their food. Their nostrils are large and far apart. When searching for food, some sharks swing their head from side to side so they can see many different angles. Some scientists think, that in the search for food, sharks bump their prey to "taste" it through their taste cells in the skin.
Sharks never stop growing new teeth. All sharks have many rows of teeth on both jaws. As the front ones wear down and fall out, they are replaced with new ones on the second row. Sometimes shark's teeth even fall out on their prey! Most active sharks have sharp, jagged teeth.
