These two Moorland breeds descend form a common root. Their early anscestor was the Friesain horse employed by Roman mercenaries guarding Hadrian's Wall (in what is now northern England). Their greatest influences however, is the swift Scottish Galloway of the 17th and 18th centuries. Both breeds are used extensively in harness for trekking.
